Acceleration from Modified Gravity: Lessons from Worked Examples
نویسنده
چکیده
I examine how two specific examples of modified gravity explanations of cosmic acceleration help us understand some general problems confronting cosmological tests of gravity: how do we distinguish modified gravity from dark energy if they can be made formally equivalent? how do we parameterize deviations according to physical principles with sufficient generality, yet focus cosmological tests into areas that complement our existing knowledge of gravity? how do we treat the dynamics of modifications which necessarily involve non-linearities that preclude superposition of forces? The modified action f(R) and DGP braneworld models provide insight on these question as fully-worked examples whose expansion history, linear perturbation theory, and most recently, non-linear N-body and force-modification field dynamics of cosmological simulations are available for study.

Gravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines
Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...
متن کاملUnscreening Modified Gravity in the Matter Power Spectrum.
Viable modifications of gravity that may produce cosmic acceleration need to be screened in high-density regions such as the Solar System, where general relativity is well tested. Screening mechanisms also prevent strong anomalies in the large-scale structure and limit the constraints that can be inferred on these gravity models from cosmology. We find that by suppressing the contribution of th...
متن کاملProducing Gravity Acceleration at Sea Surface in Persian Gulf Using Ellipsoidal Splines
In this paper, a method is proposed for producing gravity acceleration at sea surface in the Persian Gulf. This method is based on the Geoid height from satellite altimetry, high resolution Geopotential models, and ellipsoidal splines. First, the definition of the ellipsoidal spline functions is presented in a Hilbert space, which is consisted of infinitely often differentiable functions. In or...
متن کاملStealth Acceleration and Modified Gravity
We show how to construct consistent braneworld models which exhibit late time acceleration. Unlike self-acceleration, which has a de Sitter vacuum state, our models have the standard Minkowski vacuum and accelerate only in the presence of matter, which we dub “stealth-acceleration”. We use an effective action for the brane which includes an induced gravity term, and allow for an asymmetric set-...
متن کاملParameterized Post-Friedmann Signatures of Acceleration in the CMB
We extend the covariant, parametrized post-Friedmann (PPF) treatment of cosmic acceleration from modified gravity to an arbitrary admixture of matter, radiation, relativistic components and spatial curvature. This generalization facilitates the adaptation of Einstein-Boltzmann codes for solving CMB and matter perturbations in the linear regime. We use such a code to study the effect of metric e...
